World number 68 Dominik Koepfer comes into the Australian Open with little form to speak of after a poor restart to the tennis season last year and just a loss to show for 2021 so far. He faces Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien for the first time with the South American coming through the qualifiers here for some much needed match practice that could prove crucial. Neither player has reached the second round of the Australian Open before and so there is plenty of pressure on this match for both players, who are closer than the 54 places currently between them in the ATP rankings. It was particularly hard for non-European players to find enough matches to play in last season’s covid-disrupted schedule and so Dellien’s current place at number 112 is a false one. This looks like a match that could go the distance, and a set for each player in a Dellien victory could be a shrewd move here but not one for the accumulator.
