THE PREDICTION

Jan-Lennard Struff enjoyed an excellent campaign for Team Germany at the ATP Cup, beating Milos Raonic to usurp Canada as the likely group winners into the semi-finals. He also enjoyed success alongside Alexander Zverev in the doubles to squeeze past Novak Djokovic’s Serbia before Germany were eventually beaten by eventual champions Team Russia. 30-year-old Struff will be one to watch in the early rounds of the Australian Open and, draw permitting, should be targeting the last 16 here as a successful tournament. World number 121 Christopher O’Connell was just edge out of the Great Ocean Road Open in the second round by Alexander Bublik but played well and will be a competitive and robust opponent for the German number two. Struff, however, is a patient, powerful threat who should be winning this match in straight sets considering the way he played at the ATP Cup.
