31-year-old Aljaz Bedene fell foul of the ever-rising star of Jannik Sinner in the round of 16 of the Great Ocean Road Open in Melbourne Park this week. It was at that stage of the Doha Open that the Slovenian met Alexander Bublik for the only previous time, beating the Kazakhstani in straight sets. 23-year-old Bublik looked in excellent form at the start of the year, reaching the Antalya Open before unfortunately having to retire soon after starting the match to leave Alex de Minaur an uncontested winner in Turkey. Ever the enigma, Bublik’s fitness could come into question in this match but assuming he is near his peak fitness he should be able to return to the form that saw him reach a final in January. The longer this match takes, the likelier it is that Bedene can see this one through and so it seems like a toss-up between Bedene in five or Bublik in three. For want of a difficult result, take Bublik to start strongly by winning the first set here.
