World number 174 Alex Bolt enjoyed some fine form at the Murray River Open with two three-set victories over Thanasi Kokkinakis and Mackenzie McDonald before coming unstuck against the top seed Stan Wawrinka in the round of 16. The 28-year-old Aussie will receive plenty of support from a Melbourne crowd even more Australian than usual due to the covid-19 travel restrictions and he has certainly enjoyed his best rand Slam form at this home tournament. Bolt has reached the second round twice at the Australian Open and lost to Alexander Zverev in the third round back in 2019. Norbert Gombos ended 2020 in fine form, reaching the round of 16 at the Paris Masters before defeat Pablo Carreno Busta. If this match had taken place then it would be hard not to back the Slovakian to come through this match but the home crowd and Bolt’s form in Melbourne so far suggests he can make it through to the second round here for a third time.
