THE PREDICTION
World number 35 Adrian Mannarino reached the final of the Sofia Open last November to finish up a strong late-season run of form he will be hoping to convert to this Australian open. He lost in the second round of the Murray River Open this week to Marcos Giron but the Frenchman has good Grand Slam pedigree and will be able to start afresh here against Dennis Novak. The Austrian should start the Australian open higher than his current rank of 100 after an excellent win over Fabio Fognini in the ATP Cup but it was not enough to see Austria win a tie. He also enjoyed some good form late last season but the gulf in quality should tell here between two hard-working players. Mannarino’s temperament is often his trump card against the players ranked lower than him and even if Novak takes a set here it should be the Frenchman that comes through to the second round. Mannarino to win and both players to take a set looks the likeliest outcome.
