THE PREDICTION

It seems a shame for close friends Dan Evans and Cameron Norrie that the two British players in the Men’s draw should meet here but this will be a competitive, good-natured match. 30-year-old Evans enters the Australian Open as the 30th seed here fresh off the back of his first ATP title win at the Murray River Open after an incredible run of five matches without dropping a set. The world number 26 will be a danger to anyone in that kind of form and Norrie will likely struggle to best him, even if this goes to a fourth or fifth set. Evans beat Borna Coric and then Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final on his way to his first ATP title and if he can start as hot as he has been he should be targeting a first round of 16 finish at a Grand Slam here. 25-year-old Norrie enjoyed a deep run to the semi-finals of the Delray Beach Open last month and can often grab a set in close defeats on tour. Both Brits to take a set in an Evans win seems a reasonable outcome here considering Norrie could take early advantage of any title-winning fatigue in Evans’ legs.
