THE LOWDOWN
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
- World number seven Alexander Zverev took the first set against Novak Djokovic via a tiebreak in the second Germany vs Serbia tie but ultimately lost in three tough sets.
- The 23-year-old was able to find immediate retribution, though, as part of an unlikely doubles partnership alongside Jan-Lennard Struff and Team Germany won the tie on a 10-point tiebreak.
DANIIL MEDVEDEV
- Daniil Medvedev is in for his first true test of the ATP Cup after he overcame Diego Schwartzman and Kei Nishikori in fairly comfortable straight sets to help Team Russia reach the semi-finals.
- As part of the only ATP Cup team with two top 10 players, Team Russia were the dark horse for the competition before it began but now with the likelihood that Team Spain will completely miss Rafael Nadal they are surely favourites for the title.
THE PREDICTION
The head-to-head record between these players is a little misleading these days as Alexander Zverev leads the record 5-3 for now. However, three of of the last four meetings have fallen the Russian’s way and as world number four Medvedev has usurped Zverev’s place in the top 10 with gusto over the last two years. What is more, Medvedev has won both the finals played between the two, with this semi-final holding almost as much importance, and he beat the German twice just last November in the Paris Masters final and the ATP Finals. The fight that Zverev has found for Team Germany could see him claim a set here but Medvedev has started 2021 as strongly as he left last season and he should be able to finish what Andrey Rublev starts in the first match of this tie to make it 2-0 to Team Russia. Most likely in straight sets, if you must push for a tougher pick.
