THE LOWDOWN

GUIDO PELLA

  • 29-year-old Guido Pella is seeded 22nd at the Australian Open after a breakthrough 2019 season saw him rise from 66th at the turn of the year to a career-high 20th in the ATP world rankings.
  • Now world number 25, Pella enjoyed some early 2020 success with Argentina at the ATP Cup where he beat Marin Cilic to help his country make it through to the quarter-finals.
  • Pella has reached the second round of the Australian Open for the first time but he will have his work cut out to equal his best Grand Slam showing after he made it to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last summer.

GREGOIRE BARRERE

  • Gregoire Barrere made it through to the second round the hard way after coming through a tricky match against Egyptian qualifier Mohamed Safwat with three tiebreaks out of four sets.
  • The 25-year-old started 2020 off with back-to-back first-round losses at the Qatar Open and Adelaide International to Jeremy Chardy and Sam Querrey respectively.
  • After failing to make it through the qualifiers at the Australian Open last season, the Frenchman made it through to the second rounds of Wimbledon, Roland-Garros and the US Open.

THE PREDICTION

Gregoire Barrere has made it through to the second round of a Grand Slam for the fourth successive time but this is likely to be the end of the line against Guido Pella. The Argentinian does not look like much of a threat out on court but battles for every point and can be a real thorn in any player’s side at this tournament. He should come through this unscathed, although the Frenchman has every chance of taking a set.
