THE TEAM NEWS

WESTS TIGERS

  • Wests Tigers produced a woeful effort as they were comfortably defeated by Newcastle Knights last week and the manner of that alarming performance will be extremely concerning for the club’s hierarchy.
  • Michael Maguire started the season under pressure and a display as inept as that will do little to secure his long-term future and to make matters worse for the embattled head coach, he will now be without five-eighth Jackson Hastings despite being named in the initial squad list after he was handed a three-game ban.

Starting 13: Laurie, Nofoaluma, Roberts, Gildart, Maumalo, Hastings, Brooks, Tamou, Liddle, Utoikamanu, Garner, Leilua, Ofahengaue – Interchanges: Peachey, Twal, Musgrove, Simpkin – Reserves: Mikaele, Madden, Seyfarth, To’a, Simpkins, Dias, Ngatikaura

Unavailable: Shawn Blore, Adam Doueihi, Asu Kepaoa, Tommy Talau, Kelma Tuilagi, Jackson Hastings

NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS

  • New Zealand Warriors were beaten for the second time in succession to begin the new season as they were edged by Gold Coast Titans last week but the Warriors were at least right in that contest until the final hooter.
  • Nathan Brown will be desperate for his side to build on that showing with a win surely not too far away, although the head coach will have to deal with further upheaval in the spine with Ash Taylor ruled out with a hip injury so Kodi Nikorima returns in the halves.

Starting 13: Walsh, Pompey, Arthars, Berry, Montoya, Harris-Tavita, Nikorima, Fonua-Blake, Egan, Lodge, Aitken, Katoa, Curran – Interchanges: Tevaga, Afoa, Pene, Sironen – Reserves: Murchie, Murdoch-Masila, Otukolo, Petterson-Robati, Kepu, Ratuva, Kosi

Unavailable: Tohu Harris, Viliami Vailea, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Shaun Johnson, Ash Taylor

THE PREDICTION

Wests Tigers will have endured an awkward week at training after such a pitiful showing against Newcastle Knights last week. Many have questioned the attitude shown in that contest and it will be interesting to see their response here, although they will need to dig very deep if they are to overcome their five-match losing streak dating back to last season. New Zealand Warriors have also lost their opening two games of the season but have shown plenty in defeat and the away side can be the ones to get off the mark for the campaign in this one to make it four straight victories against Wests.
