Roberto Bautista Agut reached the quarter-finals of an event for the first time this season in Hamburg after beating Americans Marcos Giron and Frances Tiafoe. He pushed Flavio Cobolli all the way in the first set but ended up running out of steam, losing 7-6 6-0 with the Italian going on to win the title.
That was a much-needed boost for the 37-year-old after a dispiriting season at times. His best finish here is the fourth-round in 2016 and 2017. He will have his work cut out from the off as he takes on world number 10 Holger Rune.
Rune has endured a frustrating season at times on clay, with illness and injury curtailing his progress. He was forced to withdraw from both of his first-round matches in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. However, a fit and firing Rune showed his quality in Barcelona as he stormed through the draw to beat Carlos Alcaraz in the final. He remains the only player to beat the Spaniard on clay so far this season.
The Dane has already made two quarter-final appearances at this slam and has declared himself fit and ready to go. We can’t see anything other than a comfortable Rune win to get his campaign started.
