Luciano Darderi advanced to round three of the US Open after beating Eliot Spizzirri in four sets. Darderi made a dream start and then battled to win the second set, breaking Spizzirri when he was serving for to level the match up. The American did win the third set but Darderi got the crucial break at the end of the fourth to win 6-0 7-6 2-6 6-4. The Italian had just two wins on outdoor hard court all season before the start of the tournament, but he’s now made consecutive third-rounds at Grand Slams.
Carlos Alcaraz breezed through his second-round match, thrashing Mattia Bellucci 6-1 6-0 6-3. Alcaraz lost at that stage of the tournament last year but he was focused from the off as he sealed the win after one hour and 36 minutes without having faced a break point.
Alcaraz has not been broken on serve in his opening two matches and he’s made a strong start to his campaign as he aims for a second US Open title. We expect nothing else but another a straight sets win.
