Lorenzo Musetti advanced to the round-of-16 in New York after his compatriot and friend Flavio Cobolli retired in the third-round. Musetti was leading 6-3 6-2 2-0. Cobolli had got through two five set matches in the earlier rounds and was second best here, as he struggled to cope with the world number 10’s variety. Musetti had lost five of his previous six games heading into the major, but since dropping the first set against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first-round, he has been almost flawless.
He will now go up against Jaume Munar who made round four of a Grand Slam for the first time after comfortably getting past Zizou Bergs. The Spaniard was relentless in creating opportunities on his opponent’s serve, as he broke on seven different occasions to win 6-1 6-4 6-4.
He also leads the head-to-head 2-1 and 1-0 on outdoor hard court. Their most recent match saw Munar beat Musetti in Hong Kong right at the start of the year. The Italian is heading into some form, but he must be wary of Munar, who can grind his opponents down with his impressive rally tolerance.
