Jerome Kym staged an upset in round two as he beat Brandon Nakashima in a thrilling five set battle. The Swiss had not won a match at a Grand Slam heading into the tournament but stood tallest in the final set tiebreak to win 4-6 7-6 7-5 3-6 7-6 and he is now into the third-round.
He will now face world number four and last year’s finalist Taylor Fritz. Fritz was not at his best but came through his second-round match against Lloyd Harris in four sets. The American number one went behind in the opener and was taken to a tiebreak in the second, but found his rhythm to come through and win 4-6 7-6 6-3 6-2.
Despite the enormity of Kym’s win, he still registered 56 unforced errors and will need to reduce that count if he is to get past Fritz, who retains a solid game from the baseline. The second-round match could well have taken a lot out of the qualifier and it may just be a bridge too far.
