Jannik Sinner booked his place into the third-round of the US Open with a crushing victory over Alexei Popyrin. Sinner raced into a 3-0 lead and did not look back from there, winning 6-3 6-2 6-2 after just two hours and one minute. He will go up against Denis Shapovalov as he battled his way to victory against Valentin Royer. Royer served for the first set twice and held a set point in the tiebreak, but the Canadian went in front, and raised his game again in set three and four after losing the second to win 7-6 3-6 7-6 6-3. He thundered down 29 aces and has now got through to the third-round here for the first time since 2022.
Sinner trails in the head-to-head 1-0, after Shapovalov won their only meeting at the 2021 Australian Open. However, their fortunes have changed dramatically in the years that have followed and Sinner’s relentless nature from the baseline will force the Canadian into many errors from both wings. Sinner is likely to dominate from the off and get through in straight sets.
