Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz prediction

Defending champion Jannik Sinner overcame an injury scare to end Felix Auger Aliassime’s run at the US Open in the semi-finals and reach his fifth Grand Slam final in a row. The world number one began strongly and easily took the first set, but the Canadian fought back and levelled the match up after breaking the Italian towards the end of the second. Sinner took a medical timeout after he encountered some pain in his abdomen but raised his game in the third and came through to win 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4. Sinner has now won 26 of his 27 matches at Grand Slams this year.

He will resume his rivalry with Carlos Alcaraz in the final as the Spaniard defeated 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic in the earlier semi-final. This was Alcaraz’s first victory over the Serb on a hard court. He broke the Djokovic serve in the first game of the match and recovered from a 3-0 deficit at the start of the second to take a two set lead. He breezed through the third set as the 38-year-old faded, with Alcaraz winning 6-4 7-6 6-2. The five-time major champion has still not dropped a set at this year’s tournament.

These two will be facing each other for a fifth time this year and a third major final in a row. Alcaraz leads the head-to-head 9-5 and 6-2 on hard courts. Their last encounter was in Cincinnati last month, with Sinner being forced to retire in the first set due to illness. However, their last completed match saw the Italian exact revenge for his Roland Garros defeat with a four set win at Wimbledon to claim his first title at SW19.

Sinner is the dominant force on this surface and has won the last three hard court major titles, though he has been vulnerable at times during this tournament in terms of his first serve percentage, while he did receive treatment for an injury in the semi-final. Alcaraz has been so impressive throughout the two weeks, and all facets of his game seem to be excelling just at the right time.

Alcaraz is the only player on tour who can counter Sinner’s lasered baseline game with his variety, and we think he may just edge this battle in New York.
