In the 22 years of the T20 Blast’s existence, no county has ever retained the title. This puts into perspective the task ahead for Gloucestershire, who snuck into the knockout stage in fourth-place last year in the South Group, before going all the way to win the competition. Australian duo Cameron Bancroft and D’Arcy Short will be key to their success in 2025, as will James Bracey and Miles Hammond on the batting front.

But it’s the strike bowling of left-armer David Payne who provides the key point of difference, one of the best bowlers in the competition when fit and firing. Sam Billings’ Kent Spitfires have plenty of experience but it’s largely the same squad who has consistently failed to reach the knockout stage in recent years, usually starting slowly. It would be no surprise if we saw a repeat of that here, with Gloucestershire defeating them.
