Patrick Vieira’s Genoa have been much-improved ever since his appointment in November and they now take on another side firmly in the middle-of-the-table, Udinese, this weekend.

Genoa Preview: Solid Genoa

Genoa begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table ahead of the 31st match day of the 2024/25 Serie A campaign with Genoa, surprisingly, working more on their defensive record under Vieira since his appointment during the November break.

They come into this one, though, on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat to Juventus at the J Stadium in Turin last weekend in Igor Tudor’s first game in charge with Turkey international Kenan Yildiz scoring the only goal of the game mid-way through the first-half.

Udinese Preview: Solid Udinese

Former Legia Warsaw boss Kosta Runjaic has done an impressive job in charge of Udinese since being appointed last summer as part of the Pozzo’s refocusing on the Friulians following a relegation scare last season.

They too, though, were also beaten by one of the giants of Serie A last season as they suffered a 2-1 loss at San Siro against defending champions and league leaders Internazionale with first-half goals from Marko Arnautovic and Davide Frattesi before a late goal from Oumar Solet.

Genoa Team News: Attacking absentees

As well as the absence of defender Mattia Bani, Genoa have key injury issues such as Vitinha and in-form but injury prone loanee Maxwel Cornet. They have been able to welcome Caleb Ekuban back to full fitness, though.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Leali; Sabelli, De Winter, Johan Vasquez, Matturro; Onana, Frendrup; Zanoli, Masini, Miretti; Pinamonti

Unavailable: Bani (Injured), Junior Messias (Injured), Balotelli (Out of favour), Cornet (Injured), Vitinha (Injured)

Udinese Team News: Key injuries

As they make the trip to Genoa this weekend, Udinese are dealing with key injury concerns in attack as key man Florian Thauvin remains sidelined alongside Alexis Sanchez. As well as that, both Roberto Sava and Isaak Toure are out, too.

Predicted XI (3-5-1-1): Okoye; Kristensen, Bijol, Solet; Ehizibue, Lovric, Karlstrom, Atta, Kamara; Ekkelenkamp; Lucca

Unavailable: Sava (Injured), Toure (Injured), Thauvin (Injured), Sanchez (Injured)

Questionable:

Genoa vs Udinese Prediction

As mentioned, it has perhaps been surprising that Genoa have preferred to try and batten down the hatches since the arrival of Vieira. Known for a more fluent style of football, the former Strasbourg and Crystal Palace boss has focused on laying solid foundations. Udinese, conversely, began the Runjaic reign with some chaotic matches at the start of this season before becoming a difficult team to play against in the last couple of months and a low-scoring affair does appear likely for this one between two evenly matched sides.

Genoa vs Udinese Tip: Under 2.5 goals
