Sevilla are still yet to gain a single win in Group B after four attempts, drawing twice and losing twice, both defeats coming against Arsenal. Although they should have been victorious in Eindhoven after making it 1-2 in the 87th minute, but were denied by an equaliser deep into second-half stoppage time from the hosts.
The last time Sevilla tasted victory in all competitions was in the first round of the Copa del Rey at the start of the month. Since then, they have drawn two and lost across both La Liga and the Champions League. It’s also key to note that Sevilla have failed to keep a clean sheet over this recent period of poor results.
PSV have come a long way since their 4-0 hammering at the hands of Arsenal in the opening round of the Champions League group stage. Peter Bosz’s side responded with a hard-fought 2-2 draw at home to Sevilla and their brace of fixtures with Lens saw the Eredivisie outfit accrue four points from a possible six, drawing in France before winning 1-0 in Eindhoven.
As it stands, PSV occupy second place in Group B with five points to their name and a place in the knockout stage should they remain there. However, that could easily change ahead of the final round of fixtures, emphasising the importance of a positive result here ahead of their rematch with Arsenal.
THE TEAM NEWS
Expect 31-year-old Marko Dmitrovic to start in goal for Sevilla as his main competitor Orjan Nyland is missing through injury. Wingers Erik Lamela and Suso won’t feature for the hosts, the former has a calf problem and the latter is out with an adductor injury.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Dmitrovic; Navas, Gudelj, Ramos, Pedrosa; Soumare, Sow; Ocampos, Rakitic, Torres; En-Nesyri
UNAVAILABLE: Lamela (Injured), Suso (Injured), Bade (Injured), Nyland (Injured)
Centre-back Armel Bella-Kotchap is ruled out with a shoulder injury, whilst fellow defender Armando Obispo and winger Mauro Junior are also missing. Noah Lang’s questionable fitness renders him doubtful, but the away side will hope to have him available.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Benitez; Teze, Ramalho, Boscagli, Dest; Schouten, Tillman, Veerman; Bakayoko, Lang, Lozano; De Jong
UNAVAILABLE: Bella-Kotchap (Injured), Obispo (Injured), Mauro Junior (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Lang (Fitness)
THE KEY STATS
- Sevilla have won only two of their last 18 UEFA Champions League matches (D8 L8).
- Sevilla have won their last two UEFA club competition matches at home against Dutch teams without conceding a goal. This includes a 3-0 victory against PSV in February 2023 (UEL knock-out play-off round).
- Sevilla have lost only one of their last seven home matches in all competitions (W2 D4).
- PSV have lost only one of their last nine UEFA club competition matches (W5 D3).
- PSV are without a win in their last 15 away matches in the UEFA Champions League, group stage to final (D5 L10), since a 1-0 victory at CSKA Moskva in November 2007.
Sevilla have all the work to do with just two points to their name in Group B and with home advantage, expect them to sacrifice a significant portion of defensive stability with a view to taking the game offensively to PSV. The visitors will know that if they are composed on the ball and utilise their pacey attacking players correctly then opportunities may well fall their way. With Lens facing a tough game away to Arsenal, PSV themselves know how important victory would be from their perspective, so they’ll want to maintain their run of scoring in each of their last three Champions League fixtures to give themselves the best chance of winning. Therefore, consider backing over 2.5 goals in this one.
