Patricio Pitbull: One of the greats, but is there anything left in the tank?
Patricio Pitbull (37-9) is among the most decorated featherweights that made their career outside of the UFC, and now he sits at 1-2 since arriving into the promotion, dropping decisions to Yair Rodriguez and most recently Aaron Pico, either side of a win over Dan Ige. Nowadays the 39-year-old Brazilian is compact and patient behind a tight guard, with sharp boxing counters on the inside and excellent takedown timing once he has read an opponent, landing five takedowns on Ige. He is a bjj black belt with a dangerous guillotine and a handy low kick, but his gas tank, low volume, and lack of aggression are problems that he faces with age.
Choi Doo-ho: “The Korean Superboy” aging like fine wine
Doo Ho Choi (17-4-1) is in the middle of a career resurgence. The Cub Swanson defeat began a three-fight skid that included knockout losses to Jeremy Stephens and Charles Jourdain, but Choi returned from a long layoff in 2023 to a majority draw with Kyle Nelson, then stopped Bill Algeo, Nate Landwehr and Daniel Santos in succession. The 35-year-old is a fundamentally sound technical striker with crisp boxing, a tight guard, lovely uppercut counters, judo trips in the clinch and excellent distance management. The Santos fight, a Fight of the Night, confirmed the chin of Choi has been rebuilt.
Patricio Pitbull vs Choi Doo-ho prediction
Four years separate these two fighters, but in fighter years it is far more than that. Pitbull is walking into his forty-seventh professional bout with more than two decades of mileage on him, and his most recent outing was Aaron Pico being bigger, younger, faster, and busier across the 15 minutes. Choi is doing the opposite, hitting his stride ten fights deep in the UFC with three straight finishes.
Watching Pitbull’s Bellator tape tells you a different story to what should be expected this weekend. He is still good enough to fraud check some prospects or handle fighters outside of the rankings, but he is not getting any sharper.
Pitbull’s only win in the UFC is against Ige, a shoot boxer working behind fundamental boxing. However, Choi has more dynamic hands, more power, more precision, a taekwondo base for the kicks, and far better counter striking. He is also much bigger than Ige and Pitbull. Pitbull’s route is his takedown timing, but Choi is not going to shoot in carelessly while he is winning on the feet. Expect the pressure and volume to build from the second round onwards until Pitbull cannot answer it. A later stoppage, likely round two or three. Choi is a lock.
Prediction: Doo Ho Choi to win by KO/TKO
