Ryan Gandra: “Problema” looks to make it three for three round one KOs

Ryan Gandra (10-1) rides a nine-fight win streak into LA with under two minutes of total octagon time across his last two UFC appearances. The Brazilian power puncher earned his contract with a first-round KO of Trent Miller on the Contender Series, wiped out Jose Medina in 41 seconds on debut, then flattened Zachary Reese in 75 seconds at UFC 329. He is an orthodox pressure striker with one-shot power who starts fast and wings hooks in the pocket. He holds brown belts in both judo and BJJ but rarely touches either, attacking in straight lines behind loose defence.

Osman Diaz: Signed to give back

Ozzy Diaz (10-4) is 1-2 in the UFC and has been the opponent more than the prospect. Zhang Ming Yang stopped him inside a round on his debut in Macau, he then edged a decision over Djorden Santos at UFC 313, before Ateba Gautier knocked him out in the second round in May. The former LFA middleweight champion is a fundamentally sound boxer working behind a long jab and a counter right hand, with calf kicks thrown at a fairly low volume. He stands heavy on his front foot, and all four of his career losses have come by stoppage.

This isn’t a step up in competition, it’s purely matchmaking. Diaz was stopped by Joe Pyfer on the Contender Series back in 2022, then handed to Zhang Ming Yang who finished him in the first, given Djorden Santos as a gift win, then fed to Ateba Gautier who knocked him out in the second. Now he gets another prospect to be knocked out by.

There is no wow factor when you watch Diaz. He is less technical than Zachary Reese, who Gandra walked through in 75 seconds, and while he stands three inches taller and has five more inches of reach, that jab has not kept anybody worth mentioning off him yet. Standing heavy on the front foot leaves the calf exposed, but Gandra is unlikely to bother with it, he mostly throws heavy punches in short bursts of one-three shots and doesn’t typically extend exchanges.

We don’t really know what Gandra looks like late, but this isn’t the match up to test that.
