Gable Steveson: Can the Jackson-Wink prospect earn another nasty finish?

Super prospect, Gable Steveson (4-0) made swift work of Elisha Ellison in his UFC debut, pulverizing "The Snack Panther" with a nasty TKO in an entertaining brawl at UFC 329. One of the most decorated heavyweight wrestlers of all time, the former Olympian didn't show much of his grappling in his debut, with Steveson seemingly content to bang it out on the feet with the lower echelons of the heavyweight division. Fighting out of Jackson Wink, Steveson has UFC legend, Jon Jones, acting as his mentor in his burgeoning MMA career, a scary prospect given his athleticism, KO power, and unmatched wrestling credentials.

Sean Sharaf: Does "The Smoke" have what it takes to produce a monumental upset?

0-2 under the UFC banner, Sean Sharaf (4-2) joined the promotion as an undefeated regional prospect but has fallen on tough times since making the jump to the big leagues. Primarily operating as a heavy-handed boxer, Sharaf has dropped back to back stoppage defeats in his only two bouts with the promotion, losing to Junior Tafa and Stephen Asplund by TKO. It's also worth noting that his loss to Asplund saw him absorb an insane amount of damage en route to a second round TKO loss, raising valid questions as to how he will fare in his first bout since.

With the greatest of respect, this looks like a repeat of Steveson’s debut on paper in terms of competitiveness. Sharaf has fought similar levels of competition to Elisha Ellison and hasn’t won a fight under the UFC banner in two attempts. He’s bigger than “The Snack Panther” but that’s about it in terms of this fight constituting a step up.

Furthermore, “The Smoke” has only fought opponents who wanted to stand and bang with him, meaning that his grappling remains completely unproven against UFC level competition, let alone against one of the most decorated wrestlers in MMA history. Even if things start to go poorly for Steveson on the feet, he has the option to force this fight to the mat and into his world whenever he likes.

Sharaf has a puncher’s chance here. He has KO power and Steveson does leave openings to be countered badly when he’s striking; Ellison looked to have caught him clean a few times in their matchup, and “The Snack Panther” isn’t exactly Alex Pereira on the feet. However, that fight also proved that Steveson is willing to bite down on his mouthpiece, pour on the pressure, and score a KO against this sort of level of opposition; a state of affairs that I fully expect him to repeat here.
