Edmen Shahbazyan: "The Golden Boy" looks to improve on an impressive showing in defeat last time out

Once touted as a future title challenger at 185 pounds, Edmen Shahbazyan (16-6) seems to have settled into his role as a middle of the pack middleweight. 9-6 under the UFC banner since joining the promotion as an undefeated prospect, Shahbazyan is a powerful counter striker with an excellent kicking game, capable of finishing the fight at any moment. However, his cardio has historically proven to be an Achilles heel, with fighters capable of outlasting “The Golden Boy’s” early onslaught often finding a late finish against him as he flags.

Brunno Ferreira: Can "The Hulk" snap a two fight losing streak and regain momentum?

Currently mired in a two fight losing streak, Brunno Ferreira (15-4) enters this matchup with his back somewhat against the wall. A heavy handed striker with an opportunistic ability to find the submission on the ground, “The Hulk” has finished all but one of his UFC opponents inside the distance. However, his momentum has considerably slowed after a three fight win streak was snapped; Ferreira was brutally KO’d by Gregory Rodrigues in a rematch after winning the first showing, before getting decisively outclassed by Ikram Aliskerov in his last bout.

Edmen Shahbazyan vs Brunno Ferreira prediction

Shahbazyan looked to have finally turned a corner in his last matchup despite coming out on the wrong end of the decision. Brendan Allen is one of the better fighters at middleweight and “The Golden Boy” took him to a hard fought decision after a career of consistently wilting and getting finished in the later rounds when he was unable to score an early stoppage.

I think that Ferreira’s best chance to win this fight is to force the action to the mat; all of Shahbazyan’s stoppage losses have come against opponents who were able to ground him and tee off with GNP to force a stoppage or find an opening for a submission. “The Hulk” has excellent grappling and could well latch up a submission if he’s able to weather an early storm and take advantage as Shahbazyan tires.

However, while he’s consistently proven to be one of the most unreliable fighters to pick in middleweight history, I’m leaning towards the American here. He’s got a size and reach advantage in this matchup and hits extremely hard, while Ferreira is only one fight removed from a nasty KO loss to Gregory Rodrigues. Outside of his loss to Allen, Shahbazyan had been trending upwards with a three fight win streak, while Ferreira is on more of a slide, having dropped his last two in decisive fashion.

Prediction: Edmen Shahbazyan to win
