Casey O’Neill: “King” back on track and building momentum again

Casey O’Neill (11-2) opened her UFC run with four straight wins before consecutive losses to Jennifer Maia and Ariane Lipski, the latter being an unfortunate armbar. She snapped that skid with a clear decision over Luana Santos at UFC 305, then returned from a near two-year layoff in March to finish Gabriella Fernandes inside a round. The Scot fights with forward pressure and a high output, landing 7.89 significant strikes per minute at a relentless intensity. Her striking is not the cleanest, but she excels in the dirty boxing department with knees and elbows in the clinch, and her top game is dominant with aggressive ground and pound.

Eduarda Moura: “Ronda” looking to prove she has not hit her ceiling

Eduarda Moura (12-2) is 3-2 in the octagon and arrives off a decision loss to Wang Cong. The 32-year-old built her start at strawweight by routinely being the bigger woman in the cage, and she has now missed weight three times across her five UFC appearances. She is a grappling-heavy fighter who forces opponents onto the cage hunting takedowns, holds decent control from top position, and works a solid rear naked choke game, typically set up with ground and pound that encourages opponents to turn away.

The numbers underneath Moura’s game give an insight. She landed five takedowns on Denise Gomes and lost the split decision, then landed three on Wang Cong and lost unanimously. Getting opponents down isn’t the problem, doing enough once she is there is. Her physicality carried her through the strawweight ranks, but at flyweight, that edge has now gone.

O’Neill won’t give her many chances to find out. Moura needs to walk her opponent backwards onto the fence to initiate, and O’Neill simply doesn’t fight on the backfoot, her pressure and output should keep Moura shooting from a retreating position where takedowns are rarely successful. 

The hole in O’Neill’s game is the defensive grappling. She lost positions in scrambles against Lipski and paid for it with the armbar, so forcing the issue on the mat is an unnecessary risk when the standup is where she wins.

If anyone finishes here it’s O’Neill, but Moura is tough and has never been stopped in her professional career. Three rounds of pressure, volume, and dirty boxing should be enough.
