THE LOWDOWN
Sevilla
Both Julen Lopetegui and Jorge Sampaoli have been let go by Sevilla this season as they have spent the majority of the campaign fighting against relegation from La Liga. However, they went from one end of the spectrum to the other with Sampaoli replaced by back-to-basics boss Jose Luis Mendilibar in the March international break and the visitors have been exceptional in both La Liga and the UEFA Europa League since his appointment.
Since that aforementioned international break and Mendilibar’s arrival, the hosts have suffered just one defeat in their last 14 matches in all competitions. That run of form has included back-to-back knockout victories against Manchester United and Juventus in the UEFA Europa League as they reached the final of that competition again and the Andalusians jumping from a relegation battle towards top seven contention.
They do come into this on the back of a frustrating 1-1 draw away to bottom-of-the-table and already relegated Elche in their most recent outing in midweek, though. That result does have some mitigation as Pape Gueye was sent off just 18 minutes into the match and the Andalusians had to face an improved side with just ten men.
Real Madrid
As defending champions this season, Real Madrid have endured a difficult campaign. Los Blancos gave up hopes of retaining the title a long time ago and have had to settle for just the Copa del Rey for silverware. Despite that, as well as Carlo Ancelotti being constantly linked with Brazil, it does appear as though the Italian is preparing to stay in charge at the Bernabeu next season.
Their inconsistency continued in midweek with a 2-1 win at home to out of form Rayo Vallecano, who equalised in the 84th minute of that match via former Madrid man Raul de Tomas before Rodrygo snatched the victory five minutes later.
That match followed one of the most egregious moments in La Liga history last weekend when Real Madrid were beaten 1-0 at Mestalla by Valencia. Vinicius Junior was sent off in that match for attempting to escape from Hugo Duro’s chokehold, which followed Vinicius reacting to the crowd racially abusing him.
THE PREDICTION
There remains something to play for for both of these sides as we head into the penultimate round of fixtures in the 2022/23 La Liga campaign. Thanks to their improvement under Mendilibar, Sevilla are still fighting for a top seven finish and UEFA Europa Conference League qualification. However, they could well be tempted to rest and rotate in this one as they prepare to face Roma in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday. For Real Madrid, whilst the title may have gone as well as their hopes of retaining the UEFA Champions League, the visitors are aiming to avoid finishing below their city rivals Atletico for the fifth time in nine years. Given that Ancelotti looks set to stay, Madrid may find themselves a bit more motivated for this clash and are favourites in Andalusia.
