THE LOWDOWN
Sevilla
Since the appointment of Jose Luis Mendilibar during the March international break, Sevilla have been extremely impressive as they lift themselves from the relegation battle to being in the hunt for a top seven finish as well as potential UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.
Mendilibar’s Andalusians come into this on the back of an extra-time victory over Juventus in the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League, during the midweek. Erik Lamela’s extra-time winner has moved them into the final as they seek a seventh triumph in Europe’s second-tier cup competition.
That midweek match against Juve means Sevilla head into this weekend on the back of just one defeat in 12 matches across all competitions since Mendilibar’s appointment. That sensational run of form leaves them just a point behind Girona in seventh place with four games of the season to go.
Real Betis
Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting comfortably inside the top six and the UEFA Europa League spots in La Liga. However, with four games of the season to go, they are unlikely to be able to challenge Real Sociedad in the top four as they sit seven points behind the Basque club ahead of the 35th match day.
The Andalusians come into this on the back of an impressive 3-1 win at home to UEFA Europa Conference League hopefuls Rayo Vallecano in their most recent outing, las weekend. That has made it back-to-back victories for the hosts ahead of this weekend.
Pellegrini’s Betis have been generally entertaining in recent seasons but financial constraints and injuries have led to the squad being quite shallow and that has affected their ability to be as outgoing as they’d like. They have managed just 43 goals in their 34 games this season.
THE PREDICTION
El Gran Derby between Sevilla and Real Betis is often suggested to be the fiercest rivalry in European club football. The two sides have shared some duels, on and off the pitch, in recent seasons and in scorching temperatures this weekend in 'the frying pan of Spain', the Andalusian giants face off once more. Joaquin has been a legendary figure in Betis and Spanish football history and this is his final derby game so poetic justice suggests Betis and Joaquin enjoy some success but Sevilla are outrageously impressive form so it is an extremely tough test, especially at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. There hasn't been a draw in this game when hosted by Sevilla since 2003, which would suggest we are 'due one'.
