THE LOWDOWN
SEVILLA
Sevilla were involved in a relegation battle throughout the majority of last season but after the March appointment of Jose Luis Mendilibar, they avoided the drop, moved into mid-table and managed to win yet another UEFA Europa League. The Andalusians have started this season slowly, though, once again, and could well be battling against the drop.
They come into this on the back of a 2-2 draw with PSV Eindhoven in their most recent outing, during the week, in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. In their ten matches across all competitions so far this season, Sevilla have managed just two victories with those wins coming against struggling sides Las Palmas and Almeria.
RAYO VALLECANO
In the summer of 2021, Rayo Vallecano gained promotion to La Liga in surprising circumstances via the playoffs under Andoni Iraola. They have flirted with European qualification since their promotion but then lost Iraola as well as key players such as Alejandro Catena, Santi Comesana and Fran Garcia over the summer, leaving them in a tricky spot ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top-half of the table and still competing for a top seven finish, once again, with Francisco leading a very surprising start to the season. The Madrid-based club scored a 102nd minute equaliser from a Radamel Falcao penalty against Real Mallorca in their most recent outing, last weekend.
THE TEAM NEWS
SEVILLA
Sevilla are without four players for this weekend, including defensive duo Tanguy Nianzou and Marcao, as well as Argentine winger Erik Lamela.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Nyland; Navas, Gudelj, Ramos, Pedrosa; Fernando, Rakitic; Ocampos, Suso, Lukebakio; En-Nesyri
UNAVAILABLE: Lamela (Injured), Marcao (Injured), Nianzou (Injured), Pastor (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
RAYO VALLECANO
Francisco has an injury doubt upfront with uncertainty over Randy Nteka’s fitness, whilst Abdul Mumin will still be missing for this weekend due to suspension.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Dimitrievski; Balliu, Aridane, Lejeune, Espino; Lopez, Ciss; Palazon, Perez, Garcia; Camello
UNAVAILABLE: Mumin (Suspended)
QUESTIONABLE: Nteka (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
These two sides are separated by seven places in La Liga but not the way around one would expect with Rayo Vallecano pushing towards the top six and the European spots, whilst Sevilla languish in the bottom-half. However, those league positions may well be a little fooling as Rayo have not performed too well this season and their 7-0 hammering at the hands of Atletico in August was not entirely anomalous in terms of their performance. Sevilla have been much-improved since the September international break and, especially at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, they would be good value to back here.
TIP: SEVILLA TO WIN
