THE LOWDOWN

Getafe

With four games of the 2022/23 La Liga campaign to go, Getafe begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just inside the bottom three and the relegation places, a point behind both Cadiz and Real Valladolid.

The Madrid club have endured a shocking calendar year of 2023 and recently rolled the dice by replacing Quique Sanchez Flores with former boss Jose Bordalas. Despite an immediate improvement in performance and the odd result, Getafe remain in peril.

Their most recent outing was a 1-0 defeat away to a rotated Real Madrid side who didn’t seem too fussed about the outcome. That means they have managed just one win in their last eight matches and, probably worse and more worrying than that, they have managed to score more than one goal in a game on just eight occasions so far this season.

Elche

Under the management of Sebastian Beccacece, Elche have already had their La Liga relegation confirmed and they can look ahead to building for a tilt at promotion in the second-tier next season. Despite that, though, they do come into this on the back of one of the most surprising results across Europe so far this season.

The rock-bottom club managed to edge past La Liga’s form team in 2023, Atletico Madrid, by a goal to nil last weekend, thanks to a 44th minute striker from their veteran midfielder, Fidel. That was just the fourth win of the campaign for the Alicante club, although two of those wins have come in their last three matches.

With 26 goals scored and 64 conceded, Elche have the worst attack and worst defence in La Liga. However, given their recent results, they may be seeking to bow out of the Spanish top-flight on a high.

THE PREDICTION

Despite their recent 1-0 victory against Atletico, a team rock-bottom, as they have been for much of the campaign, and one that has already been relegated, should be cannon fodder for a side seeking to beat the drop. Getafe will be reliant on their home form at the Coliseum in their remaining matches if they are to survive. This is likely to not be pretty, as is often the case with a Bordalas side, but with their home advantage, Getafe should be able to grind out a victory in this one.
