THE LOWDOWN
Barcelona
After pulling their financial levers in the summer of 2022, and still enduring major off-field issues, Barcelona have overcome a stumbling and underperforming Real Madrid side to win La Liga. The Catalans, under the management of Xavi, are struggling through to the end of the season having already been crowned champions a couple of weeks ago against their city rivals, Espanyol.
The Spaniard’s appointment in the Autumn of 2021 was followed by a string of excellent performances after the turn of the year with a fast-moving, intricate and aggressive style of football seemingly being implemented. However, such as is the chaotic nature of the club, Xavi has had to be pragmatic and change his style with an emphasis on being more reactive. Whilst effective in winning the title, the performances haven’t quite great heights.
Their most recent outing was a 3-1 defeat away to bottom three side Real Valladolid in midweek. That loss followed up a 2-1 defeat at Camp Nou to Real Sociedad last weekend and they have now won just won of their last four matches in their last ten across all competitions.
Mallorca
Last season, as they headed into the run-in, Real Mallorca appointed Javier Aguirre to ensure they managed to avoid falling back into the second-tier at the first attempt, following promotion in 2021. The Balearic Islanders comfortably survived and the Mexican has guided them to another mid-table finish this time around with UEFA Europa Conference League qualification not out of the question just yet.
The visitors begin this weekend’s round of fixtures three points outside of the top seven. Aguirre’s men will be aiming for a top-half finish at least but a return to European football will excite those in Palma.
Their most recent outing was a slender 1-0 win at home to Valencia with Kosovan striker Vedat Muriqi notching his 14th goal of the campaign with a 64th minute winner. Mallorca have been strong in the last month or so but they have been quite reliant on their home advantage of playing outside of mainland Spain.
THE PREDICTION
Under the management of Xavi, Barcelona are limping towards the end of the campaign but, in what is their final match at Camp Nou for at least 15 months, the motivation will remain high for this one. Renovations are taking place at the famous stadium so Barca are playing their home games at the old Olympic Stadium next season. They face a Real Mallorca side that have already enjoyed an impressive campaign so will be quite content with themselves regardless of what happens in these final two matches. Given the fact Barca will want a good Camp Nou send off, the fact they have conceded just four goals in 18 home games this season and Mallorca have suffered three successive defeats away from home, a Barca win is to be expected.
