THE LOWDOWN

ATLETICO MADRID

Ever since the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Atletico Madrid have been much-improved and very strong, playing a far more proactive and attacking style of football just as it had seemed as though Diego Simeone was heading into his final few months as Los Rojiblancos’ manager. They would be aiming to reclaim the Spanish title as both Barcelona and Real Madrid lack a little something.

They came from behind to defeat Feyenoord by three goals to two in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, which followed a 3-2 win against Cadiz in La Liga whereby they were two goals down at home to the Andalusians. Atletico have now enjoyed four successive matches across all competitions in recent weeks.

REAL SOCIEDAD

As one of the most intense and high pressing teams anywhere in Europe, Real Sociedad have often started very well before fading. Last season, though, they managed to ensure a top four spot and UEFA Champions League qualification so that extra intensity with six important matches in the Autumn could have a major impact on their performances and fitness.

They managed an impressive 2-0 win in Austria in midweek, defeating Red Bull Salzburg by two goals to nil. That followed an even more impressive 3-0 hammering of Athletic Club in the big Basque derby in La Liga, last weekend. They have suffered just one defeat in their opening ten matches across all competitions so far this season.

THE PREDICTION

This is a match between two of last season’s top four in La Liga and two sides that remain Spain’s last beacon of real hope of mounting a title challenge alongside the two Clasico giants. Atletico Madrid have played a far more entertaining style of football of late but control is the want of Diego Simeone and a return to that more pragmatic style is expected against a Real Sociedad side who are almost too intense for their own good, squeezing any space for creativity in either half of the pitch. It is a potentially defining and decisive match and a tense affair is expected in the capital.
