THE LOWDOWN
Atletico Madrid
After a disappointing start to the season in which Atletico Madrid exited the UEFA Champions League at the group stages and blew any chances of a title early on, Los Rojiblancos have been the most impressive side in the calendar year of 2023. Diego Simeone’s long and successful reign at Atletico was seemingly come to an end but he is now set to stay as they build for a tilt at the title next season.
The hosts have been exceptional this year but their most recent outing was a 3-3 draw with struggling Espanyol, during the week. Atletico had led that match by three goals to nil just after half-time, albeit one of the three goals was dubiously awarded as it didn’t appear to cross the line, but their Catalan opposition fought back to share a 3-3 draw.
That, along with a 1-0 defeat away at bottom-of-the-table and already relegated Elche as well as a slender 1-0 win at title winners Barcelona, have been the only irritations in the last few months for a reinvigorated Atleti.
Real Sociedad
Under the management of Imanol Aguacil, Real Sociedad need just one point from their final two matches of the season to secure a top four finish and, as a result, UEFA Champions League qualification. La Real have started brightly in each of the last two campaigns before drifting away but, this time around, they look set for Europe’s elite competition next season.
The visitors come into this on the back of a slender 1-0 win at home to relegation-threatened Almeria, who went down to ten men mid-way through the first-half. Takefusa Kubo scored the only goal of that game in first-half stoppage-time as the Basque club edge closer to securing their sot at Europe’s top table.
That victory has continued their impressive run of form, following a 2-1 win at Camp Nou against title winning Barcelona last weekend. They have now enjoyed four wins in their last five matches, including victories against both Clasico clubs, and are unbeaten in their last seven matches.
THE PREDICTION
These are two sides tucked inside the top four and the UEFA Champions League spots with two games to go and both managers will be very content with their work as the season comes to a close. The two teams have had spells of seriously poor form that has even threatened their employment status this season but both have recovered to finish the campaign well. Atletico Madrid haven't just been the gritty 'Cholismo' stereotype, either, with a front foot aggression that is enjoyable to watch. La Real have been beating all comers, including, as mentioned, both Madrid and Barca in recent weeks. This one, at the Metropolitano, should be quite a fun watch for the neutral.
