Atletico Madrid were and probably do remain in danger of their season unravelling with a recent exit from the Copa del Rey at the semi-final stage to Athletic Club and the same opposition mounting a serious challenge to Atletico’s spot in the top four and next season’s UEFA Champions League qualification spots.
Los Rojiblancos did, though, manage to revive the last couple of months, coming from 2-0 down on aggregate to defeat Serie A’s champions-elect Internazionale in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League at the Metropolitano in midweek with Memphis Depay’s well taken late equaliser setting up a penalty shootout victory.
BARCELONA
Xavi Hernandez will be leaving Barcelona as their manager at the end of the season with the Blaugrana well out of the title race, losing in the semi-finals of the Supercopa de Espana and the last eight of the Copa del Rey in what has been a disappointing season on the pitch and another bizarre campaign off the pitch for the Catalans.
The visitors do, though, come into this one on the back of a brilliant performance in midweek as they comfortably defeated Napoli by three goals to one in the second-leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie. That means Barcelona are now unbeaten in their last nine matches across all competitions since Xavi announced his summer departure.
