Almeria
Following promotion last season, Almeria would have viewed survival by any means as a successful 2022/23 La Liga campaign. Well, the Andalusians may well just about enjoy that success as, with four games of the season to go, they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting two points outside of the bottom three and the relegation places in a very congested bottom-half of the table.
Their most recent outing was a 3-1 defeat to Osasuna, who rallied themselves a week after losing the Copa del Rey final to Real Madrid in Seville. Almeria were comprehensively beaten in that match and a second-half stoppage-time goal from Lazaro offered them a flattering score line.
That loss has continued their inconsistent run of form with three victories and four defeats in their last seven Liga matches. Whilst their inconsistency and unpredictability can lead to a bet on them being difficult, one thing that has remained the same throughout that run of form is an ability to score but lack of ability to defend. Each of their last ten matches have featured both teams scoring.
Mallorca
Javier Aguirre was brought in to stave off relegation in their first season back in the top-flight last season and the Mexican is set to build on that and guide Real Mallorca into a very respectable middle-of-the-table finish this time around.
The Balearic Islanders haven’t given up hope of an unlikely tilt at a top seven finish, and, as a result, potential UEFA Europa Conference League football in Palma next season. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom-half of the table but just four points off Girona in seventh with four games of the campaign to go.
Their most recent outing was a typical Aguirre/Mallorca performance and result as they managed to hold on to a 1-0 win at home to Cadiz, with an early winning goal from a defender. They have suffered just two defeats in their last eight matches.
THE PREDICTION
For different reasons, both of these sides are desperate for three points with this season’s La Liga campaign doing away with the idea of ‘mid-table’ and end of season ‘on the beach’ sides. If results go their way this weekend, Almeria could all but secure their status in La Liga for next season, whereas Mallorca are dreaming of rolling back the years by bringing European football back the Balearics. Given Mallorca’s goal has already been reached this season, Aguirre may well be a bit more relaxed and his style so, along with Almeria’s recent form, both teams scoring looks a good bet for this one.
