THE LOWDOWN

ALAVES

Following promotion back to the top-flight via the playoffs last season, Luis Garcia Plata’s Alaves are expected to be one of the sides battling against finishing in the bottom three and the relegation places once again this time around. The Basque club have a reputation for fairly rugged and defensive tactics and that has been shown in their two away games this season.

Away to Cadiz and then Getafe last weekend, two sides that are expected to be down towards the bottom end of the table, Alaves have suffered a 1-0 defeat in both matches. In between those losses, they entertained Sevilla and came out on top as 4-3 winners in a thrilling match at Mendizarozza, highlighting a genuine ability to get at some of the better sides in the league, albeit Sevilla have had a nightmare start to the campaign.

VALENCIA

Under the management of Ruben Baraja, Valencia are expected to battle against relegation once again, like they did last season. The Valencians narrowly escaped the drop last season and off-field protests from the supporters against the ownership have continued into the 2023/24 campaign. They have, though, overperformed expectations at the stary of this campaign.

They started the season with surprising back-to-back victories, despite being forced to play several players out of position. Firstly, they went to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and defeated Sevilla by two goals to one before edging past newly-promoted Las Palmas with a penalty scored mid-way through the second-half. They were beaten 2-1 by Osasuna at Mestalla last weekend, though, with the winning goal coming deep into second-half stoppage-time.

THE TEAM NEWS

ALAVES

Luis Garcia Plata remains without Giuliano Simeone who suffered a horrific broken leg in pre-season but the Basque club should remain unchanged for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Sivera; Gorosabel, Abqar, Sedlar, Duarte; Guevara, Benavidez, Guridi; Alkain, Kike, Rioja

UNAVAILABLE: Simeone (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

VALENCIA

Valencia have made a couple of signings with Selim Amallah and Sergi Canos but their squad remains threadbare and Ruben Baraja is likely to name an unchanged lineup.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Mamardashvili; Correia, Gabriel, Ozkacar, Gaya; Perez, Pepelu, Diakhaby, Lopez; Guerra, Duro

UNAVAILABLE: Mari (Injured), Marcos Andre (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Towards the end of this season, the expectation is that these two are involved in what is expected to be another congested and tight relegation battle down at the bottom end of La Liga. Alaves did enjoy a high-scoring encounter in their first home game this season but the Basque club are unlikely to have that be a common occurrence this season. Valencia tend to be quite proactive, though, under Ruben Baraja, and with such a weak defence, they will likely attack Alaves and both teams scoring seems like quite a good, and good value, bet.
