THE LOWDOWN

ALAVES

After gaining promotion last season, Deportivo Alaves have enjoyed an impressive campaign, albeit, even when they were sitting in the middle-of-the-table, the Basque club were the subject of major rumours and speculation suggesting that Luis Garcia Plaza would be sacked at the turn of the year but they have steadied the ship since that.

They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting ten points clear of the bottom three and the relegation places. They come into this one on the back of a 2-0 loss to Athletic Club in their most recent outing at San Mames a couple of weeks ago with a first-half brace scored by striker Gorka Guruzeta.

REAL SOCIEDAD

Real Sociedad have made a habit of beginning seasons really quickly and really well before drifting away significantly in each of the last three or four seasons. That appeared to be the case once again when they were eliminated at the Round of 16 stage of the UEFA Champions League and in the Copa del Rey semi-finals but they have recovered well in La Liga.

La Real come into this one on the back of a comfortable 2-0 defeat of struggling Cadiz in their most recent outing at the Anoeta a couple of weeks ago before the March international break. Real Sociedad had pulled off a remarkably dramatic 3-2 victory over Granada before that, too, as they push for European qualification.

THE TEAM NEWS

ALAVES

Alaves have two key injury issues for this weekend’s visit of Real Sociedad as both Aleksandar Sedlar and Jon Guridi are unavailable for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Sivera; Gorosabel, Abqar, Marin, Lopez; Blanco, Guevara; Rioja, Hagi, Vicente; Samu

UNAVAILABLE: Guridi (Injured), Sedlar (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

REAL SOCIEDAD

Ander Barrenetxea is a doubt for this weekend, whilst Robin Le Normand is out suspended and the likes of Igor Zubeldia and Alvaro Odriozola are sidelined through injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Alex Remiro; Traore, Elustondo, Pacheco, Galan; Mendez, Zubimendi, Merino; Kubo, Oyarabal, Becker

UNAVAILABLE: Le Normand (Suspended), Zubeldia (Injured), Odriozola (Injured), Merquelanz (Injured), Fernandez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Barrenetxea (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This one is a Basque derby. Deportivo Alaves have benefitted from playing at the fairly difficult to go to Mendizarrozza and a game against regional rivals should produce a typically hostile atmosphere. La Real, who have one of the most intense styles of football in Europe, will be grateful for the two-break that they have had and there will actually now be an expectation that Imanol Aguacil’s side can earn a third successive La Liga victory.

TIP: REAL SOCIEDAD TO WIN
