THE LOWDOWN

Vizela

Alvaro Pacheco’s Vizela head into the final round of the Portuguese top-flight campaign sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table. The hosts head are finishing the season in really poor form.

The hosts were edged out by a goal to nil by relegation-threatened Maritimo in their most recent outing, last weekend. That loss saw them concede a winner to Brazilian right-back, Claudio Winck, deep into second-half stoppage-time.

That late loss means Vizela are now winless in their last six matches, collecting just two points in that time. That run of form follows on from flirting with the top six and the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying spots.

Sporting Lisbon

Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP have enjoyed excellent form in the last few months but head into the final day of the season with no chance of squeezing into the top three and the UEFA Champions League qualification spots.

Sporting did manage to prevent their city rivals, Benfica, from winning the league title on their own patch last weekend. Sporting did have a two-goal lead heading into the final 20 minutes of the match but Benfica fought back to secure a 2-2 draw.

The 2020/21 Primeira Liga champions are going to have to settle for UEFA Europa League football, despite having suffered just one defeat, a 1-0 loss to Juventus in the first-leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie in Turin, in their last 19 matches in all competitions.

THE PREDICTION

These are two sides that are heading into the final round of fixtures in very different form. Vizela will be content with their 2022/23 Primeira Liga campaign as they sit in mid-table but the hosts have endured some really difficult form to finish the season. Sporting CP, on the other hand, will be immensely frustrated with their season, missing out on the top three and having to settle for second-tier European qualification. Despite that, though, they should finish with a flourish and win this one quite comfortably.
