THE LOWDOWN

Rio Ave

Following promotion last season, Rio Ave have enjoyed an impressive return to the Portuguese top-flight as they head into the final round of fixtures sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table.

The home team come into this on the back of being comfortably beaten 3-1 by a Pacos de Ferreira side that are fighting against automatic relegation from the top-flight. They went behind inside the opening minute before Patrick fired back a couple of minutes later but conceded two second-half goals to continue their poor form.

That loss means Rio Ave have now suffered back-to-back defeats as they drift into the bottom-half of the table. The hosts have managed just one win in their last eight matches.

Famalicao

Under the management of Joao Pedro Sousa, Famalicao begin the 34th match day in the 2022/23 Primeira Liga season sitting just about inside the top-half of the table. They are in the midst of some poor form to finish the campaign, though.

The visitors were beaten by Sergio Conceicao’s still title chasing Porto by four goals to two last weekend. They went 2-0 down early on before fighting back to 2-2 at half-time with Porto going on to eventually win 4-2 in the second-half. Porto’s Iranian striker, Mehdi Taremi, scored four penalties in that game and, remarkably, three of them were from the penalty spot.

After spending much of the second-half of the campaign in UEFA Europa Conference League qualification contention, Famalicao have now suffered three defeats and collected just one point in their last four matches.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these sides will be content with their 2022/23 Primeira Liga seasons as they sit in mid-table. The two teams will have viewed survival as quickly as possible as success and they have achieved that with both sides occasionally flirting with the top six and UEFA Europa Conference League spots. The two teams are enduring a difficult end to the campaign, though, with poor runs of form. Given the Portuguese top-flight is a naturally low-scoring league, let alone when there is a game with two sides in poor form and little to play for, this shoudn't be a thriller.
