Diana Shnaider vs Elise Mertens prediction

Diana Shnaider will hope it’s a case of third time lucky when she meets Elise Mertens in the round of 16.

The Russian has lost both of their previous meetings in straight sets, including a 6-2 7-6 loss in Stuttgart last month. 

Shnaider’s only defeat since then was against Iga Swiatek in Madrid and the 13th seed has romped through the Rome draw so far without dropping a set. 

Mertens has been equally impressive on the clay and was excellent in sweeping to a 7-5 6-1 success over third seed Jessica Pegula. 

The Belgian will have the psychological edge and has the clay craft to leave the 21-year-old frustrated again.
