THE LOWDOWN

BOAVISTA

Boavista are one of two clubs outside of ‘Os Tres Grandes’ (The Big Three of Porto, Sporting and Benfica) to have won the Portuguese title. They did so in 2000 but have ever since been mid-table cannon fodder; as was always the case. This season began with hope but major off-field issues have left them with a lot of uncertainty.

They started the campaign defeating defending champions Benfica by three goals to two before hammering Portimonense. They won four and had won draw in their opening five matches. They have still suffered just one defeat in their opening eight matches and will be keen to continue their fine start but performances and results have majorly dipped, amid the aforementioned issues.

SPORTING LISBON

A few years ago, Sporting CP reclaimed the Portuguese title for the first time in about 20 years as they pipped both Porto and Benfica. The capital city club have since drifted off and even missed out on a top three finish and UEFA Champions League qualification last season, with Ruben Amorim’s stock as one of Europe’s most exciting young coaches taking a fall.

They have, though, started this season in excellent form without a defeat in their opening eight matches. They come into this on the back of four successive Primeira Liga victories and began the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table. The visitors’ 1-1 draw with Rakow Czestochowa in midweek means they have suffered one defeat in 12 matches this year.

THE TEAM NEWS

SPORTING LISBON

Sporting CP will be without their defender, Ousmane Diomande, for this weekend’s game against Boavista but they have no other unavailable players for this one.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Adan; Luis Neto, Coates, Inacio; Esgaio, Hjulmand, Morita, Nuno Santos; Edwards, Gyokeres, Goncalves

UNAVAILABLE: Diomande (Suspended)

THE PREDICTION

Boavista have started the season well and may have, just a month ago, been eyeing up a tilt at the top six this season with the reward being a return to European football. However, both on and off the pitch, their focus has had to change to survival. Sporting have been outstanding this year and have been able to rotate in each of their last two matches so a fresh and vibrant visiting side should take all three points in this one.

BETTING TIP: SPORTING CP TO WIN
