Armando Evangelista led Arouca to a top six finish and UEFA Europa Conference League qualification last season. However, he departed the club over the summer and joined Brazilian Serie A side, Goias. His replacement, Daniel Ramos, oversaw Arouquenses being knocked out of that competition in the third qualifying round by Norwegian Eliteserien side, Brann.
In the 2023/24 Primeira Liga campaign, they have started slowly with just one win in their opening six matches of the campaign and that came on the opening day against Estoril when they had trailed three times in the match. Half of their goals scored in the Primeira Liga this season came in that 4-3 victory on the opening day.
CHAVES
Chaves gained promotion to the top-flight in 2022 and, like many sides in recent seasons, comfortably survived and established themselves firmly in the middle-of-the-table. However, over the summer, they lost their manager, Alvaro Pacheco, to Estoril. That led to some major concerns for the upcoming campaign and those concerns have been a reality.
They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in the 2023/24 Primeira Liga table after six matches of the campaign. They have managed to pick up just one point in those six games and tha came in their most recent outing against a newly-promoted Estrela da Amadora side who had led by two goals to nil with just five minutes of the 90 to go.

Neither of these sides will be pleased with the start of this season but to different extents so far. Arouca, following the elimination from the UEFA Europa Conference League as well as no victory since a very fortunate win on the opening day, will view this as a major opportunity to get a second win of the campaign against a badly struggling Chaves side that haven’t coped well with the loss of Alvaro Pacheco. Backing Arouca, though, remains risky, so hedging seems safest.
