THE TEAM NEWS
MORELIA
- Monarcas Morelia are coming off a shocking result during the quarter-finals, as they defeated Leon – one of the biggest title contenders. Morelia have lost just once in their last seven games dating back to the regular season (W3, D3, L1) and enter this game on a four-game undefeated streak at home (W2, D2).
- Morelia should be close to full strength, especially after experienced centre-back Gabriel Achilier will return from a one-game suspension. The lone absentee will be winger Ray Sandoval, who has missed most of the Apertura campaign with a long-term knee injury. Fernando Aristeguieta is doubtful after picking up an injury late in the previous match and if he can’t play, then Carlos Ferreira would get the start.
Expected starting XI: Sebastián Sosa; José Joaquín Martínez, Gabriel Achilier, Efraín Velarde, Sebastián Vegas; Luis Ángel Mendoza, Aldo Rocha, Rodrigo Millar, Edison Flores; Miguel Ángel Sansores, Fernando Aristeguieta (Carlos Ferreira)
AMERICA
- Club America pulled the upset and eliminated Tigres, but they did it in emphatic fashion since they won 4-2 on the road after losing the first leg 2-1 at home. Las Aguilas are a team to fear on their travels since they enter this game on a three-game winning streak away from home.
- America are expected to recover star striker Nicolas Castillo, who missed the quarter-finals and the final matches of the regular season with an ankle injury. Federico Vinas is also fit and available, meaning Las Aguilas won’t have any substantial absences ahead of this contest.
Expected starting XI: Guillermo Ochoa; Paul Aguilar, Bruno Valdez, Emanuel Aguilera, Jorge Sánchez; Guido Rodríguez, Richard Sánchez; Andrés Ibarguen, Giovani dos Santos, Federico Vinas; Henry Martín
THE PREDICTION
Both sides enter this game with great runs preceding them, but Club America have the stronger squad and a far more experienced team that should be better suited to play in these instances. While Morelia are not likely to be pushovers given their recent results, America are slight favourites due to their stronger attack (32 goals in the regular season plus five on the playoffs) and better defence (22 goals conceded in the Apertura and four during the playoffs) compared to Morelia (36 and 30, respectively).
