Alessio Dionisi left Empoli after earning them promotion in the summer of 2021 and left for Sassuolo. Sassuolo have stagnated, whilst Empoli have, surprisingly maintained their Serie A status, firstly under Aurelio Andreazzoli and then under the management of Paolo Zanetti. They have had back-to-back 14th placed finishes.

The pressure might be about to grow on Zanetti and Empoli, though, as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in the Serie A table. They have suffered four defeats out of four so far this season, conceding 12 goals and they come into this one on the back of a 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Roma in their most recent outing, last weekend.

Internazionale will be seeking a chance to reclaim the Italian title after relinquishing it to city rivals Milan in 2022 and then finishing third behind Napoli and Lazio last season. Simone Inzaghi led the Nerazzurri to the Coppa Italia trophy as well as the UEFA Champions League final last season so the focus will now be on improving their league form.

They have started the 2023/24 Serie A campaign extremely well with four victories in their four matches so far this season. They hammered their city rivals Milan in the Derby della Madonnina last weekend, winning by five goals to one at San Siro. They shared a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.

Paolo Zanetti as two summer signings, Elia Caprile on loan from Napoli and Daniel Maldini on loan from AC Milan, out injured for this weekend’s visit of Inter.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Berisha; Bereszynski, Walukiewicz, Luperto, Pezzella; Fazzini, Grassi, Maleh; Cancellieri, Destro, Cambiaghi

UNAVAILABLE: Caprile (Injured), Maldini (Injured)

Simone Inzaghi was able to rotate in midweek but remains without a few key players, including midfield duo Stefano Sensi and Turkey’s Hakan Calhanoglu.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Sommer; Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Frattesi, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Martinez, Thuram

UNAVAILABLE: Sensi (Injured), Calhanoglu (Injured), Cuadrado (Injured)

This is arguably the biggest mismatch anywhere in European football, at least in the major leagues, over the course of the upcoming weekend. Empoli have badly struggled at the start of this season as the only team yet to collect a point in their opening four matches. In contrast, Inter are the only team in Italy’s top-flight yet to drop a point. A comfortable and potentially heavy win is the expected outcome for this one.
