In June, Cagliari returned to Serie A after spending just one season down in the second-tier. The Sardinians defeated Bari over two legs in the Serie B playoff final and, coached by former Leicester and Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri, would have expected to be a stubborn and difficult to play against side back in the Italian top-flight.
However, Ranieri remains in charge but the 71-year-old is coming under increasing pressure with The Islanders beginning this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in Serie A. Their most recent outing was a 3-0 hammering at the hands of Fiorentina and they have collected just two points from their opening seven matches so far this season.
ROMA
Jose Mourinho’s ‘third season syndrome’ has been a theme throughout his career, whether at Chelsea, Real Madrid or Manchester United, but it seems to be happening once again here. His discontent was clear over the summer in Rome with what he believed to be an inadequate summer transfer window that hindered his chance of lifting the capital city club into the top four.
After seven matches of the 2023/24 Serie A season, they begin this eighth match day in the bottom-half but their form has slightly turned around with just one loss in their last six games across all competitions. Their 4-0 hammering of Servette in the UEFA Europa League in midweek followed a much-needed 2-0 defeat of Roman rivals Frosinone, last weekend.

It has been an underwhelming start to the season for both of these sides but to very different extents and levels. Cagliari would have anticipated a long and hard battle against relegation throughout the campaign but even with that expectation, they remain winless and that will be viewed as an underperformance. Roma have been poor this season but their form has recently turned around a little so a fairly low-scoring and low quality away victory is the expected outcome for this one.
