THE KEY STATS

  • This is the second encounter between these two nations at the 2023 finals following their 2-2 draw in the group stage. They have met on three other occasions in competitive U21 fixtures with Spain winning twice and the other match having finished level.
  • This is Spain’s 11th U21 EURO semi-final. Their record in U21 EURO semi-final ties is W8 D2, the only nation to have eliminated them in the semi-finals is Portugal (1994 and 2021).
  • Spain are aiming to reach the final for the ninth time, they already hold the record for most appearances in the final.
  • Spain have lost only one of their last 13 U21 EURO final tournament matches (W10 D2).
  • Spain have lost only one of their last 31 U21 EURO qualifying and final tournament matches (W27 D3).
  • Only one of Spain’s eight goals at the 2023 finals has been scored in the first half. That was the goal scored after just 20 seconds by Abel Ruiz vs Croatia - the fastest goal in U21 EURO final tournament history.
  • Ukraine’s only previous U21 EURO semi-final tie was in 2006 when they went on to reach the final following a penalty shoot-out victory against Serbia and Montenegro.
  • Ukraine have lost only one of their last 13 U21 EURO qualifying and final tournament matches (W9 D3).
  • Ukraine have scored two or more goals in ten of their last 11 U21 EURO qualifying and final tournament matches.
  • Ukraine were leading at half-time in three of their previous four matches at U21 EURO 2023.

THE PREDICTION

Under the management of Santi Denia, La Rojita come into this on the back of an extra time defeat of Switzerland in the quarter-finals. Spain conceded a second-half stoppage-time equaliser to the Swiss in that tie before Juan Miranda won the game in extra time. They have been a strong side in the competition but do now face a side that will be buoyant on the back of an impressive quarter-final win. The Ukrainians hammered one of the pre-tournament favourites, France, by three goals to win with their experienced squad showing real quality, most notably Chelsea’s Mykhaylo Mudryk. These two shared an entertaining 2-2 draw in the group stages and both teams scoring, once again, seems quite likely.
