THE LOWDOWN

RENNES

The sales of Jeremy Doku and Lovro Majer have dented what was becoming quite an impressive Rennes side as they believed they could potentially challenge for European qualification once again, pushing towards the UEFA Champions League spots. They have collected just a point from their last four matches and are languishing in the bottom-half of the table.

Rennes’ lack of incision and general sheer quality now means they have managed just one Ligue 1 victory since their opening day thrashing of newly-promoted Metz in August. They did, though, manage an impressive 3-1 defeat of Panathinaikos in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League in midweek.

LYON

Laurent Blanc complained of the situation and was then sacked early on but Fabio Grosso’s appointment has not improved matters at Lyon as one of the truly big and historic clubs in French football appear genuinely destined for a stint in Ligue 2. The visitors remain winless after ten matches so far this season and are rock-bottom.

They come into this on the back of a game at home to Metz which is one of those where you are left thinking well ‘if they aren’t winning that then this could actual be genuine’ – which had followed on from a 2-1 defeat at home to a previously winless Clermont which had sparked a similar/exact same sentiment.

THE TEAM NEWS

RENNES

Stade Rennais have a few injury and suspension concerns, such as Steve Mandanda, but they still have a deep and relatively impressive squad.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Gallon; Doue, Theate, Belocian, Truffert; Bourigeaud, Le Fee, Matic, Terrier; Blas, Gouiri

UNAVAILABLE: Assignon (Suspended), Omari (Suspended), Yildirim (Injured), Mandanda (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

LYON

Fabio Grosso have no injury concerns or suspension issues for this weekend so they have a fully fit and available squad as they face Clermont.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Lopes; Mata, Diomande, O’Brien; Kumbedi, Alvero, Caqueret, Diawara, Tagliafico; Balde, Lacazette

UNAVAILABLE:

THE PREDICTION

Bruno Genesio, up against his former club, will relish the opportunity to heap more misery on the struggling visitors. Rennes have often found themselves stifled by the opposition and unable to find an incisive cutting edge to put opponents to bed but up against a Lyon side so badly struggling at the bottom-of-the-table, there will be a major expectation they do that. Rennes are favourites but Lyon’s recent stubbornness, at the very least, may make it a fairly frustrating watch for the neutral.

BETTING TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – RENNES TO WIN OR DRAW & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
