THE LOWDOWN

REIMS

Last season, Stade de Reims became quite popular on social media with a long unbeaten run masterminded by Will Still. The loss of Folarin Balogun over the summer was expected to spark a downturn in results but they spent a fair bit of money on the squad with over £60 million in incoming players.

They began with a 2-1 loss away to Marseille, after taking a 1-0 lead, but have suffered just one loss in their six matches since then. They enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win at home to the crisis club Olympique Lyonnais in their most recent outing last weekend and begin the weekend sitting in the top three of the Ligue 1 table.

MONACO

Monaco massively improved as last season went on but an exit from European competition in the knockout playoffs of the UEFA Europa League was then followed by finishing outside of the European places in Ligue 1. The summer appointment of Adi Hutter was expected to lead to another major improvement and that has been the case so far this season.

The principality club come into this weekend’s round of fixtures as Ligue 1 league leaders. They have suffered just one defeat all season, coming at home to rivals Nice, but got back on track with a thrilling come from behind 3-2 win at home to Olympique de Marseille in their most recent outing, last weekend, at the Stade Louis II.

THE PREDICTION

This is a huge early season encounter right at the top end of Ligue 1 with two sides that begin the match day sitting in the top three. Monaco have been very entertaining to watch, too, with 28 goals coming in their seven matches so far this season. That average of four goals per Monaco game is not quite matches by Reims but they are bringing three goals per game to the table with 13 scored and eight conceded. This should be quite entertaining for the neutral, as well as potentially decisive.
