THE LOWDOWN
MONTPELLIER
There are a few clubs who ended up finishing firmly ensconced in the middle-of-the-table in Ligue 1 that will be majorly concerned about drifting down towards the bottom and a relegation battle after the league was reduced from 20 to 18 teams and potentially making the danger area a lot more competitive and congested this season.
So far this season, Montpellier have collected nine points from their opening seven matches but there remains a lot of concern. Prior to last weekend’s much-needed victory over struggling Lorient, their only win had come early in the season against Ligue 1’s crisis club, Lyon. Their two victories have been against two of the bottom three at the moment.
CLERMONT
Ever since gaining promotion to the French top-flight a few seasons ago, Clermont have been one of the major favourites to get relegated but they have managed to consistently comfortably survive. Last season, they even managed to get into the top-half of the table under the impressive management of Pascal Gastien.
They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures side sitting in the bottom two and the automatic relegation places, though, after a really difficult start to the campaign. They remain winless in their opening seven matches with two draws and five defeats so far. They did manage a shock goalless draw with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, last weekend.

CLERMONT
Pascal Gastien has a couple of injury concerns but he will be able to name an unchanged eleven for their trip to Montpellier this weekend on Sunday afternoon.

THE PREDICTION
Montpellier begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in mid-table and they will be more than content with that if they finish there in the middle-of-the-table. Their comfortable and impressive 3-0 hammering of Lorient last weekend will give them a good opportunity to defeat a similarly struggling Clermont side. The visitors look destined to finally fall through the Ligue 1 trap door and Montpellier should win this one quite comfortably, especially with their home advantage.
TIP: MONTPELLIER TO WIN
