THE LOWDOWN
METZ
After gaining promotion to the top-flight last season, much like Le Havre, Metz began the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign relatively well but now their Hungarian coach Laszlo Boloni is under significant pressure as they have collapsed and drifted all the way down and into the bottom two and the automatic relegation places.
They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting three points behind Montpellier Herault in the relegation playoff place and four off the aforementioned Le Havre. They do, though, come into this one on the back of a vital and surprising 2-0 win against Nantes at Stade de la Beaujoire – Louis Fonteneau, last weekend.
CLERMONT
It does appear almost absolutely certain that Clermont will be relegated to Ligue 2 this season and they are in a category alongside the likes of Sheffield United, Almeria and Salernitana in simply awaiting their fate to be mathematically confirmed but they are still deciding to stand by manager, Pascal Gastien, as they become detached at the bottom-of-the-table.
Clermont come into this one on the back of a 5-1 annihilation at the hands of Olympique de Marseille in their most recent outing, last weekend. The rock-bottom side were behind at half-time due to a goal from Iliman Ndiaye before Bilal Boutobba equalised in the 53rd minute but then Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Jonathan Clauss, Luiz Henrique and Faris Moumbagna all contributed to the rout.

THE PREDICTION
It is a bottom-of-the-table clash on Sunday afternoon as 17th host 18th. If either side are going to stand a chance of avoiding the drop this season then they will have to come out on top in this one. In those circumstances, it would be easy to think that it would therefore be a gung-ho, entertaining thriller but the fact of the matter is these two are down at the bottom due to a real lack of quality so under 2.5 goals and a tense and nervy but low quality nail-biter seems a good bet.
TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
