THE LOWDOWN

LORIENT

In recent seasons the likes of Lorient, Lens and Clermont have overperformed their pre-season expectations with smart off-field recruitment and strategies. Under the management of Regis Le Bris the home team pushed into the top half of the Ligue 1 table last season. They will be looking over their shoulders this time.

After six matches of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign, their only victory was a fairly anomalous hammering of Lille back in August. They come into this on the back of a 5-3 defeat away to Nantes, which has continued their entertaining theme throughout the campaign as there have been 22 goals coming in their six games so far.

MONTPELLIER

Much like their opposition Montpellier will be one of a group of French sides concerned by the league’s reduction in size from 20 to 18 teams. Montpellier, who finished in mid-table last season but struggled in the second part of the campaign, will know that any stagnation this season could see them drop into something of a relegation battle.

The visitors are winless in four matches and begin the weekend sitting just above Lorient on goal difference. After a reasonable start to the campaign, Montpellier’s only win has come against crisis club Lyon and they have since suffered back-to-back defeats before successive draws with their most recent outing being a goalless draw at home to Rennes.

THE TEAM NEWS

LORIENT

Lorient are without several players for this weekend’s encounter against Montpellier as the likes of Tiemoue Bakayoko and Bamba Dieng remain injured.

MONTPELLIER

Montpellier remain without a couple of injuries up-front this weekend with both Arnaud Nordin and Theo Sainte-Luce missing for this weekend’s trip.

PREDICTED XI (X-X-X-X): Lecomte; Sacko, Omeragic, Kouyate, Sylla; Chotard, Ferri; Fayad, Savanier, Khazri; Adams

UNAVAILABLE: Nordin (Injured), Sainte-Luce (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

These would have been two of the leading candidates from sides that comfortably survived last season to get dragged into a scrap down at the bottom end of the table. They have both began with just one win apiece, with that win being a hammering of their opposition in exceptional circumstances, but both have remained generally entertaining with Montpellier’s recent goalless draw against Rennes not necessarily representative of their performances as a whole. Given that, both teams scoring looks a good bet for this one.
