THE LOWDOWN

CLERMONT

It has been a generally impressive few years of Clermont as they climbed into the middle-of-the-table last weekend but they have endured a really difficult campaign as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures in a position where they are destined for the drop down into Ligue 2, still being coached by Pascal Gastien.

The home team come into this on the back of a goalless draw against a high-flying Nice side at the Allianz Riviera in their most recent outing, last weekend. They have managed just one win in their last 14 matches inside 90 minutes across all competitions and they begin the weekend sitting five points adrift of safety.

MARSEILLE

At the beginning of last week, Olympique de Marseille took the decision to move onto their third manager of the campaign. Gennaro Gattuso, who had replaced Marcelino earlier on in the campaign, was sacked and former Ivory Coast boss Jean-Louis Gasset was appointed in his stead ahead of their second-leg with Shakhtar Donetsk.

That UEFA Europa Conference League knockout playoff tie saw Marseille eventually win by five goals to three on aggregate with a 3-1 win at the Stade Velodrome. That was then followed up by an impressive 4-1 annihilation of struggling Montpellier last weekend with goals from Iliman Ndiaye, an own goal and a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

THE PREDICTION

A couple of weeks ago, this one may have seemed a bit dicey for Marseille as they travel to face a struggling side but, instead of that, we have a very different contest. Clermont are edging towards falling into the category of simply waiting for their fate of relegation to be confirmed, whilst Marseille have started the Jean-Louis Gasset era with two impressive performances and results. A fairly comfortable Marseille victory is to be expected for this one.

TIP: MARSEILLE TO WIN
