THE LOWDOWN

CLERMONT

Impressive off-field management has led to Clermont consistently punching above their weight in Ligue 1 with the club avoiding relegation against the odds and even finishing in the top-half last season. However, it does appear quite likely that they will finally fall back down Ligue 2 this season, as has been the expectation throughout their time back in the top-flight.

They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom two and the automatic relegation places in France’s top division. They have managed just two victories in their opening 11 games but come into this on the back of much-improved form with their 1-0 defeat of Lorient before the international break meaning they have now lost just one of their last six matches.

LENS

Much like Clermont, Lens have benefitted from impressive off-field work and last season’s runners’ up are really clicking into gear now after a very slow start to the campaign. The visitors went into the break sitting just outside of the top five after an extremely impressive run of form that has been built upon their defensive form, stemming from goalkeeper Brice Samba.

They squeezed past Olympique de Marseille by a goal to nil a couple of weeks ago with Jonathan Gradit scoring a 90th minute winner. Lens are now unbeaten in their last seven Ligue 1 matches in a run that stretches back to mid-September. In that time, they have also defeated Arsenal in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.

THE TEAM NEWS

CLERMONT

Pascal Gastien has no injury or suspension concerns so would be able to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend’s visit of Lens.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Diaw; Pelmard, Ogier, Neto Borges; Konate, Gonalons, Gastien, Allevinah; Cham, Rashani; Nicholson

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE:

LENS

Franck Haise has a few injury concerns as they travel to Clermont with the likes of Oscar Cortes and Jimmy Cabot both unavailable for the clash.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Samba; Gradit, Dannso, Medina; Aguilar, Abdul Samed, El Aynaoui, Haidara; Sotoca, Thomasson; Wahi

UNAVAILABLE: Cortes (Injured), Cabot (Injured), Farinez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

These two have had similar rises to the top but are very different clubs in terms of history, fan base and their general size and reputation. The home team are struggling badly down at the bottom end of the table and, given the fact they have scored just eight goals in 11 matches so far this season, they will be concerned about coming up against such a strong defensive side and a Lens win, probably by keeping a clean sheet too, is the expected outcome of this one.

BETTING TIP: LENS TO WIN TO NIL
